Northern California communities adopt ordinances to block “small cell” antennas
Several communities in northern California have recently adopted ordinances to block or delay the siting of small cell antennas which are essential for the deployment of 5G. These communities include Mill Valley, San Anselmo, and Ross in Marin County, Petaluma in Sonoma County, and Boonville (in process) in Mendocino County.
Community opposition to siting of small cell antennas has been reported in Oakland and Piedmont (Alameda County), San Rafael and Fairfax (Marin County), Sebastopol (Sonoma County), and Nevada City (Nevada County).
Meanwhile the FCC is preparing to adopt rules that would prevent localities from adopting legislation that interferes with the deployment of small cells or 5G.
This conflict between the public and Federal regulators is likely to receive national media coverage.

“… the FCC will vote later this month on a measure that would:
Ban local regulations designed to prohibit wireless infrastructure deployment;
Standardize the fee structure cities can charge for reviewing small cell projects;
Establish a 60-day shot clock for attaching small cells to existing structures and 90 days for new builds;
And sets “modest guardrails on other municipal rules that may prohibit service.””
